Description

Members and Guests are invited to the 2018 University House Curatorial Project Launch

Curated by Eugenia Pacitti

Drawing on reproductions of objects from the Baillieu Library’s Rare Book Collection and the University of Melbourne Herbarium, the exhibition explores the art of zoological and botanical illustration in Australia over the last 230 years, as represented in the University of Melbourne’s Cultural Collections.

The exhibition provides a glimpse into the world of birds, animals, and plant life, as seen through the eyes of colonial scientists and illustrators. It engages with early explorer’s first reactions to Australian flora and fauna, debates over classification, the artistic techniques used in illustration, and also highlights members of the University who contributed to the establishment of the western scientific tradition in Australia.
